Florida Grand Opera presents A Streetcar Named Desire
by Andre Previn
“Stella, Stella!” is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the title A Streetcar Named Desire. However, rest assured that André Previn’s operatic adaptation of Tennessee Williams’ famous play will leave with you with so much more.
Set in New Orleans in the late 1940s, A Streetcar Named Desire spins a tightening web around three classic characters: Blanche DuBois, a troubled former schoolteacher; her sister, Stella; and Stella’s husband, Stanley. When Blanche leaves her home in a small Mississippi town to move in with the couple, her insecurity, indiscreet sexual behavior, drinking and terror of losing her fading Southern-belle beauty create a cataclysmic scenario that threatens to destroy everyone in its path.
Filled with soaring melodies and an orchestral score that puts you right in the middle of New Orleans during a hot summer, A Streetcar Named Desire is a contemporary verismo masterpiece.
