Afrobeta are an unstoppable duo. They’re known for feel-good lyrics, electro-beats and psychedelic mischief. Their sound resists classification. Tony “Smurphio” Laurencio’s timbraI tendencies are instantly identifiable — aqueous synth leads effortlessly navigate through rhythmic mazes of snapping and shuffling percussion, blanketed in painterly strokes of bass (this is Miami-made music, after all). Cuci Amador’s emotive vocal and lyrical lines provide a challenging counterpoint, creating a tension too complex for standard-issue pop — a welcome sensory distortion, easily memorable even after only one taste.
Live on the Plaza is a series of outdoor concerts on our Parker and Vann Thomson Plaza for the Arts.
