Born in Agen in 1953, Francis Cabrel was raised in Astaffort (Lot-et-Garonne)/Southwestern France as evidenced by his melodious accent. He still lives there, and it figures prominently in his career. A major singer-songwriter, Cabrel has sold more than 25 million records thanks to his sophisticated, sensitive and poetic style.
Cabrel discovered the guitar and began composing songs at an early age. He was inspired by folk artists such as Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen and James Taylor. As a teenager, he interrupted his schooling and started to focus on performing. His band Les Gaulois got noticed at regional balls, and he acquired more and more confidence with the guitar.
In 1974, his song "Petite Marie," inspired by his wife, won a radio talent contest and caught the attention of CBS Records, which in 1977 released his first album, Les Murs de Poussière. In 1979, his second album, Les Chemins de Traverse, which includes the hit "Je l'aime à mourir," was a resounding success. 1980 saw the release of the album Fragile and the triumph of “La Dame de Haute-Savoie” and “L’encre de tes yeux.”
In 1985, he composed the single "Il faudra leur dire" for an association fighting leukemia. It was later adapted by Ray Charles. Then a father, Cabrel returned with his family to his hometown. His eighth album, 1984’s Samedi soir sur la Terre, sold more than 3 million copies. It includes the now classic titles "La corrida," "La cabane du pêcheur," "Je t’aimais, je t’aime, je t’aimerai" and "Octobre."
Cabrel’s 14th studio album, 2020’s À l'aube revenant, is a tribute to troubadours who have influenced him. He followed the album’s release with the Trobador Tour, during which he recorded a 31-track live album released in December 2021.
Cabrel is a fundamental French artist who combines commercial success, humility and artistic demand. He has remained true to his musical and personal convictions. This authentic artist and his repertoire captivate French and French-speaking audiences around the world.
