BELLINI Overture to Norma
SCHUBERT Symphony No. 8 in B Minor, D. 759 (Unfinished)
TCHAIKOVSKY Symphony No. 4 in F Minor, Op. 36
Treat yourself to an evening of “high drama and thrilling orchestral playing” (The New York Times) when the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Riccardo Muti open the 2024-25 Classical Music season.
There’s no better way to experience the legendary sound of this historic ensemble than with two monumental masterpieces by two of the world’s best-loved composers. From its ominous opening fanfare, which earned the piece its nickname “Fate,” to its euphoric life-affirming conclusion, Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony is the epitome of a Romantic showpiece and “definitely the best work I have written so far,” the composer wrote. Schubert may have stopped work on his “Unfinished” Symphony after just two movements, but that Allegro and Andante, at once so sweet and majestic, are justly considered the catalyst for the Romantic movement, which reached its orchestral apotheosis with Tchaikovsky’s symphonies. Enhancing the Romantic mood, the evening opens with the overture to Bellini’s Norma, the achingly beautiful opera about endless love and cruel betrayal.
