The Magic Flute
by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
An original FGO production
Conceived and directed by Jeffrey Marc Buchman
In this groundbreaking update of Mozart’s The Magic Flute, five teenagers sneak into an empty warehouse to play a fantasy role-playing board game. As the dice roll, fantasy becomes reality as a fire-breathing dragon bursts into their space and each teen becomes a character from the opera.
Prince Tamino falls in love with a portrait of Pamina, the Queen of the Night’s daughter, who is held captive by the supposedly evil Sarastro. Tasked with rescuing Pamina, Tamino is joined by the comically unheroic bird catcher Papageno, and they receive a magic flute and magic bells for their protection. They soon discover, however, that Sarastro is not the villain they were led to believe.
Tamino and Pamina face perilous trials together, but emerge victorious. The Queen and her cohorts’ dark schemes are foiled, casting them into eternal night. As dawn breaks through the warehouse windows, the audience is reminded that this quest has unfolded in the teens’ imaginations. But there’s one last magical twist before the curtain falls!
The production's creator and director, Jeffrey Buchman, brings a renewed commitment to the wit and charm of The Magic Flute, and propels Pamina to the forefront of this journey toward enlightenment in thought-provoking fashion.
The Magic Flute will be performed in German with English- and Spanish-projected translations.
